Samuel Barclay Beckett (Foxrock, Dublín, 13 de abril de 1906-París, 22 de diciembre de 1989) fue un dramaturgo, novelista, crítico y poeta irlandés, uno de los más importantes representantes del experimentalismo literario del siglo XX, dentro del modernismo anglosajón. Fue igualmente figura clave del llamado teatro del absurdo y, como tal, uno de los escritores más influyentes de su tiempo. Escribió sus libros en inglés y francés, y fue asistente y discípulo del novelista James Joyce. Su obra más conocida es el drama Esperando a Godot.

From halcyon, from Latin Alcyone, from Ancient Greek Ἀλκυόνη (Alkuónē), daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx. When her husband died in a shipwreck, Alcyone threw herself into the sea whereupon the gods transformed them both into halcyon birds (kingfishers). When Alcyone made her nest on the beach, waves threatened to destroy it. Aeolus restrained his winds and kept them calm during seven days in each year, so she could lay her eggs. These became known as the "halcyon days," when storms do not occur. Today, the term is used to denote a past period that is being remembered for being happy and/or successful.

El rojo y el negro es Julien Sorel: atractivo joven de 18 años. Gracias a sus talentos como latinista y a sus estudios en teología, podrá abandonar la serrería de su padre y entrará como preceptor en casa del alcalde de Verrières, el Señor de Rênal, donde no tardará en seducir a la esposa de éste. Alejado de Verrières, se introducirá en el seminario pero, cansándose pronto de su vida de seminarista, escapará a París, donde seducirá a la bella Mathilde de La Mole, una joven rica proveniente del gran mundo. Ambicioso, Julien trazará su camino en la mentira y en la estafa.
