The
1967 Medicine Prize gave us insight into the nature of the subtle
processes in the eye. The three Laureates Ragnar Granit, Keffer Hartline
and George Wald shared the prize. In his speech at the Nobel Banquet,
George Wald said that the Nobel Prize had "cast a radiance upon our
science".

Miguel Angel Asturias.

A messenger from Latin America
Guatemalan
author and poet Miguel Angel Asturias was awarded the 1967 Literature
Prize for writings "deep-rooted in the national traits and traditions of
Indian peoples of Latin America". He is a prominent representative of
the modern literature of Latin America, with a social pathos and an
intense involvement in the situation of his country. Miguel Angel
Asturias is the first of two Nobel Laureates from Guatemala.

No Peace Prize awarded in 1967
Why
wasn't the Peace Prize awarded in 1967? That we do not know, as the
discussions remain secret for 50 years. The Statutes of the Nobel
Foundation state that "If none of the works under consideration is found
to be of the importance indicated in the first paragraph,
the prize money shall be reserved until the following year". The
Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to reserve the prize amount to the
following year, but did not use it then, so the prize amount for 1967
was allocated to the funds.

No Prize in Economic Sciences
It
wasn't until 1969 that the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences
in Memory of Alfred Nobel was instituted. The award is given by the
Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences according to the same principles as
for the Nobel Prizes. A total of 78 Laureates have received the award
during the years.
