動乱の最中にあるマドリードからバレンシアに向け最後の列車が避難民を乗せて出発することになりました。乗車券を与えるのはアルバレス大尉の役目で、充分な理由のある者でなければ乗車は許されないことになっています。アルバレスは己の恋人カルメリータに切符を与え、次いで政治犯人として捕らえられていた親友エドゥアルドを逃がしてやろうと思いました。計らずもカルメリータとエドゥアルドは以前愛し合っていた仲でした。混乱の市中では恐怖のために脱走した兵士フワンと街の女ローラが恋に落ち、アメリカの新聞記者デキスターは女兵士マリアと恋に落ち、それぞれ脱出の機を狙っていました。エドゥアルドは偶然やはり昔の恋人であった男爵夫人が、ジゴロのマイケルと一緒に避難しようとしているのに会いました。夫人はマイケルの切符で彼を乗車させるためジゴロを射殺しました。アルバレスはカルメリータとエドゥアルドの仲に気付きましたがいずれを選ぶかは彼女の意志に任せ後刻車中で会う約をして一旦別れましたが、発車間際になって駅に軍隊が現れアルバレスは政治犯人を逃がしたために反逆罪で、男爵夫人は殺人犯として、エドゥアルドは脱獄の罪でそれぞれ探索されることになりました。こうして列車は発車中止を命ぜられましたが、これを知ったアルバレス大尉は愛するカルメリータが他の男と幸福を見出せるように己を犠牲にする決心で、拳銃をもって司令官に強請し遂に列車出発の命令を出さしめました。その夜彼は一晩中司令官を見張って取消命令の出ないようにしましたが、夜明けと共に発見され銃殺に処されてしまいました。しかしその時列車はカルメリータやエドゥアルドを始め多くの人々を乗せて、もうバレンシアに近づいていたのです。
