El periodista Alexandre (Gregory Patrikareas) viaja hasta la “Sala de espera”, al norte de Grecia en la frontera con Albania, donde refugiados de diferentes países esperan un permiso para regresar a su país y abandonar ese lugar. El periodista y su equipo de televisión van a filmar la vida de toda esa gente y, casualmente, creen reconocer entre la multitud a un político griego desaparecido años atrás de forma misteriosa. En el Festival de Cannes fue nominada a la Palma de Oro a Mejor película.


Aléxandros (Gregory Karr) es un periodista que viaja a la "Sala de espera", un lugar del norte de Grecia en la frontera con Albania, que se llama así porque allí se concentran refugiados kurdos, turcos, albaneses, polacos, rumanos o iraníes que esperan un permiso que les permita abandonar ese lugar. El periodista llega con un equipo de televisión para filmar la vida de estas gentes; en un momento dado, cree reconocer a alguien: un político griego (Marcello Mastroianni) que, diez años antes, desapareció misteriosamente.

愛する人たちの死について書くというのは、書くということそのものと同じくらい古い行為のはずだが、いざそれをするほうに自分が傾くと、即座にことばに詰まってしまう。メモを取っておこうと自分が考えていることにぞっとなり、恥じ入りながらメモを取り、メモを修正している自分を見損なう。情動的にかき乱される原因は、父が有名な人だったことにある。書きとめておく必要をおぼえる背後には、この野卑な時代の中で自分自身の名声を高めたいという誘惑が潜んでいるかもしれない。もしかすると書きたいという呼び声に抗して、謙虚に黙っていたほうがいいのかもしれない。謙虚なふるまいというのは、実のところ、僕の一番好きな虚栄の形態なのだ。しかし、書くということに関してよくあるように、主題のほうが書き手を選んでくるという面もあり、抵抗しても無駄なのかもしれない。
