Ernesto Mr. T は 182.5cm と小柄なので、背が高い人に憧れます。
今日(12月29日)は、かつてボクシングのヘビー級歴代世界王者の中で最も身長の高かった Jess Willard の生まれた日です。2メートル近く(196cm) ありました。[現在までの最高は､2005年にWBA王者となった ロシアの Николай Сергеевич Валуев Nicolay Valuev で、213cmであります。]
しかも スペイン人だったのです。ナバラ州出身で、本名は José Villar でした。
Jess Willard, (n. el 29 de diciembre de 1881 en St. Clere, Kansas - m. 15 de diciembre de 1968 en Los Ángeles, California), fue un boxeador estadounidense campeón mundial de peso completo.
Según el diario ABC, su verdadero nombre era José Villar, y era hijo de un emigrante de Tafalla (Navarra) llamado Martín Villar (ABC 17 mayo de 1915 p19).
Willard, born in Pottawatomie County, began his professional career in
1911 at Sapulpa, Oklahoma, where he lost on a foul. Six weeks later he
won over the same fighter at Oklahoma City. He followed with five
knockouts and two 10-round decisions. Willard, then the largest man ever
to enter the ring-six feet, six inches Ernesto Mr. T もせめてこれくらいは欲しかった, and 235 pounds-had five
knockouts in 1912 and lost only once, in a fight that went 20 rounds. In
1913 and 1914 the "Kansas Giant" won in New York, Buffalo, and Atlanta.
Empezó a boxear cuando ya casi había cumplido 30 años. つまり 29歳でボクシングを始めたわけです。 A pesar de este inicio tardío le fue bien y se fue convirtiendo en "la gran esperanza blanca" aludiendo al hecho de que era el boxeador de raza blanca con más posibilidades de derrotar al entonces campeón mundial, el afroamericano Jack Johnson. Esto en el marco del fuerte racismo imperante en los Estados Unidos de ese entonces.
Finalmente tuvo la oportunidad de pelear por el título. El 5 de abril de 1915, en La Habana, Cuba, se impuso a Johnson por KO en el asalto 26.

Johnson's boxing skills were superior but Willard wore him down. Both
fighters bore the marks of battle but it was not a bloody fight and
Johnson was able to leave the ring under his own power.
Se dijo que Johnson se había dejado ganar para evitar represalías racistas, y para que le permitieran volver a los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, para otros Willard ganó por ser el más fuerte y capaz de soportar el clima tropical y la duración del combate pactado a 45 asaltos. 45ラウンドですよ､今は全ての世界戦がたったの12ラウンドですが。

Con una talla de 2,00 metros Willard fue el campeón mundial indiscutible más alto de la historia. Willard, ya con 37 años, perdió el título ante Jack Dempsey el 4 de julio de 1919 en Toledo, Ohio. 米国にも沢山 Toledo という町があるのです。Recibió una soberana paliza e increíblemente al árbitro no detuvo el combate a pesar de que en el primer asalto Willard había sido derribado 7 veces y tenía rota la nariz, varias costillas y había perdido varios dientes. 鼻､肋骨､歯が折れてしまったのです。Willard siempre creyó que Dempsey había colocado algo en sus guantes para endurecer los golpes. Esto nunca se probó. デンプシーがグラブの中に何か仕込んでいたかもしれないなんて由々しき謎ですね。
Luego de retirarse se dedicó al mundo del espectáculo apareciendo en algunos teatros, actos de feria y películas. Falleció en 1968. 亡くなったのも12月(15日)でした。12月に生まれ､12月に死すです。Fue electo al Salón Internacional de la Fama del Boxeo de manera póstuma en 2003.
Jess Willard (December 29, 1881–December 15, 1968) was an American boxer. He was the heavyweight best puncher in the world from 1915 to 1919. When Jack Johnson was the Black world champion, Willard was one of the many "White Hopes" who wanted to take the title. He succeeded when he beat Johnson by a 26th round out-cold punch in Cuba in 1915. He fought to keep the title and won once before losing it to Jack Dempsey in 1919.
初めに書きましたように、Jess Willard こと José Villar は スペインは Navarra 州の Tafalla 出身の Martín Villar の息子でしたが､闘牛好きの Ernesto Mr. T が Tafalla, Navarra で思い出すのは 2010年8月の次のような場面です。video を御覧ください。18人が怪我をしたそうです。世の中いろいろな出来事が起こるものですね。
