95年前の今日、1917年5月16日、メキシコの文豪フアン・ルルフォは生まれました。中南米の作家の中で最も重要な作家の１人で、2冊の薄い本、『ペドロ・パラモ』（1955年）と短編集『燃える平原』（1953年）によって評価されています。20世紀最高の西語作家を選ぶアルファグアラ社の催した投票では、ホルヘ・ルイス・ボルヘスとともに最高位に選ばれました。
JUAN RULFO and Jorge Luis Borges were named the most important Spanish-language writers of the 20th century. Rulfo's reputation rests on two slim books, the novel Pedro Páramo (1955), and the collection of short stories El Llano en llamas (1953).
JUAN RULFO ha sido considerado uno de los más destacados escritores en la lengua española del siglo XX, junto a Jorge Luis Borges, por una encuesta realizada por la editorial Alfaguara. Su reputación se asienta en dos pequeños libros: El llano en llamas, compuesto de diecisiete pequeños relatos y publicado en 1953, y la novela Pedro Páramo, publicada en 1955.

『ペドロ・パラモ』（1955年）は、短めの長編小説で、フアン・プレシアドという名前の男が、父親を探して、死んだ母親の故郷コマラに来ますが、そこは何と文字通りのゴーストタウンで、幽霊の住民が住んでいたのです。発表当時の反応は、冷ややかかつ批判的で、最初の4年間でわずか2000部しか売れませんでしたが、その後高い評価を受けることになりました。ラテンアメリカの作家たちに重大な影響を与えました。
ガブリエル・ガルシア・マルケスは、最初の4冊の本を書いた後、小説家として八方ふさがりになったように感じ、1961年に『ペドロ・パラモ』を発見し、人生が変わったと述べています。「ルルフォの本は全部合わせても合計300ページしかないが、それはソポクレスが我々に残したものとほぼ同じページ数で、やはりソポクレス同様に永遠に残るものと信じている」とガルシア・マルケスは、語っています。
Gabriel García Márquez says that he felt blocked as a novelist after writing his first
four books, and that it was only his life-changing discovery of Pedro Páramo in 1961 that opened his way to the composition of his masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude.
He noted that all of Rulfo's published writing, put together, "add up
to no more than 300 pages; but that is almost as many, and I believe
they are as durable, as the pages that have come down to us from
Sophocles."
