Esteemed author Abe Kobo hid his six-year struggle with prostate cancer until his death in 1993, according to an actress who was close to him.
Abe, a giant in Japanese contemporary literature, was regarded as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In her memoir to be released this month, Yamaguchi Karin, 66, writes that Abe learned he had prostate cancer during a medical checkup in November 1987 while he was in hospital.
At that time, the cancer had already spread to his skull and thighbones, and he was given only a few years to live.
Yamaguchi associated with Abe for about 20 years until his death at age 68.
His cause of death was given as acute heart failure.
Abe is perhaps best known for his book "The Woman in the Dunes 砂の女," published in 1962.
With regard to his battle against cancer, no descriptions were made in the collected edition of his works or the chronological record of his career.
According to Yamaguchi’s memoir, Abe was administered hormonal agents, and in 1988, he underwent surgery to remove his testicles. In 1991, he received radiation therapy.
Abe was adamant that people should not know about his cancer. When he heard that other authors were spreading gossip about his illness, Abe confronted a person in the literary world, whom he regarded as the source of the rumor, by phone.
For his part, Abe observed his cancer calmly, relying on his experience of having belonged to the faculty of medicine in his university days. Using a model skeleton, he marked body parts that were affected by his cancer. He also kept notes on how the disease progressed.
One entry reads, “My pains continued for nearly 12 hours.”
Yamaguchi has a copy of Abe’s diary, which he wrote with a word processor. One portion reads, “But the biggest problem is that I was told that I had malignant tumors.”
Though the diary was included in the collected edition of his works, this sentence was omitted.
“Abe may have hated to show his weak point. Even to me, he did not say, ‘It’s painful.’ Though he was losing his physical strength due to his fight against cancer, he was trying to talk about death not emotionally, but as an objective of consideration, sometimes with humor,” said the actress.
“Abe was doing his best to complete his unfinished essays or novels. Sometimes, he suddenly got up from a bed and began to type with a word processor,” she added.
Toba Koji, a professor of literature at Waseda University and an acknowledged expert on Abe’s works, said, “It seems that Abe’s fight against prostate cancer was intentionally hidden, even after his death. What Yamaguchi, who knew Abe well, has written can be totally trusted. Because of that, we can gain valuable clues to clarify the strange cheerfulness and the signs of death that loom over in Abe’s works written in his closing years.”
