私 Ernesto Mr. T は、自己紹介の中にありますように「学生時代に英米文学を学んだのち 英語 の講師などをして細々と生計を立てて」おります。そこで、今回は今までと少し趣向を変えて、Ernesto Mr. T が 生徒用に作った 英語の問題を載せておきます。
英語の問題と言っても、このブログの2012年4月8日日曜日の「英国現代作家ベスト50(2008年)」の中の7位
V. S. Naipaul [（1932 - ）2001年ノーベル文学賞。コミカルな作風。トリニダード・トバゴ生まれ。] の ノーベル賞受賞時の banquet speech で、短くて [ ２分少々 ]、しかも楽しい、one of the best and shortest speeches in the world です。英語が多少分かる人なら、おかしくて、お腹がよじれるかもしれません。
では、開始しましょう。
下記の質問に答えなさい。

This is no metaphor. Here is the strapless watch. What did it mean? What was the awful symbolism? The (⑧ ) that all through the Nobel week I was to be without my watch.

Some centuries later, the Emperor Julian, training one morning with his soldiers, lost the wicker part of his shield. He was left holding only the (⑫ ) or the handle. Not having the resourcefulness of these great men, I could find no words to make the bad symbolism good. Now my strapless watch, benign again, tells me without (⑮ ) that my time is running out. My two minutes are ㋓ up.
