Dog days (ラテン語:diēs caniculārēs)とは、「夏のうち最も暑い時期」「真夏」「盛夏」を表します。北半球においては7月上旬から8月中旬頃まで、南半球においては1月上旬から2月中旬頃までを指します。
この名前の由来は、おおいぬ座のシリウス(Dog Star)が、7月から8月にかけて日の出と共に現れ日の入りと共に沈むことが、この時期が暑くなることと関連付けられたものであります。
古代ローマでは、dog days は7月24日から8月24日まで、もしくは、7月23日から8月23日までとされていました。多くのヨーロッパの文化（ドイツ、フランス、イタリア等）では、今日でもこの期間を同様な呼び方で呼んでいます。
The phrase dog days refers to the sultry days of summer. In the Northern Hemisphere, the dog days of summer are most commonly experienced in the months of July and August, which typically observe the warmest summer temperatures. In the Southern Hemisphere, they typically occur in January and February, in the midst of the austral summer.
In Ancient Rome, the Dog Days ran from July 24th through August 24th, or, alternatively, from July 23rd through August 23rd. In many European cultures (German, French, Italian) this period is still said to be the time of the Dog Days.
スペイン語にも canícula という語がありますが、時期の規定が 多少異なるようです。
