fain -- Herman Melville がよく用いた英語

今日・9月28日は Herman Melville の命日(1891年)です。

彼の誕生日 ８月１日(1819年)には "Herman Melville 『白鯨』" というページを拙ブログでも設けました。

Melville 及び Moby Dick については話が尽きませんが、今日は Melville が よく用いた fain という英語を見てみることにしましょう。

手元にある Longman Dictionary of American English 3rd edition (2004) は 見出し語彙数5万2千語 もありますが、fain は出て来ません。

そこで、Webster's 3rd (1966) の fain の定義を載せておきます。

３番目の間投詞はちょっと特殊なので、今回は扱いません。１番目と２番目を見てください。もうお分かりだと思いますが、簡単に言うと、形容詞や副詞で「喜んで」という意味の単語なのです。

Melville は この fain を他の作品でも用いていますが、今回は Moby Dick の中の fain に限定しましょう。

まず形容詞の方ですが、4ヶ所で使用されています。Webster's 3rd でも説明されていたように、いずれも be fain to-infinitive の形です。最初の fain は Chapter 3. The Spouter-Inn. 「潮吹亭」で登場します。

We were fain to button up our monkey jackets, and hold to our lips cups of scalding tea with our half frozen fingers.

２番目は Chapter 34. The Cabin Table. 「船長室の卓」です。

Such portentous appetites had Queequeg and Tashtego, that to fill out the vacancies made by the previous repast, often the pale Dough-Boy was fain to bring on a great baron of salt-junk, seemingly quarried out of the solid ox.

３番目は Chapter 104. The Fossile Whale. 「化石鯨」にあります。Fain が主語の前に出て来る 強調の倒置です。

Fain am I to stagger to this emprise under the weightiest words of the dictionary.

最後４番目は Chapter 130. The Hat. 「帽子」の章で登場します。

It domineered above them so, that all their bodings, doubts, misgivings, fears, were fain to hide beneath their souls, and not sprout forth a single spear or leaf.

４つ目でお分かりいただけたと思いますが、人間以外の主語でも用いられることがあるのです。

実は Moby Dick には 副詞の fain にの方がもっとよく(十数ヶ所で)使用されているのですが、話が長くなりすぎるといけませんので、また別の機会に譲ることにしましょう。
