Imamura Shōhei fue un director de cine japonés nacido en Tokio el 15 de septiembre de 1926 y fallecido el 30 de mayo de 2006. Profesor en la Escuela de cine de Yokohama. Está considerado el director de cine más destacado de Japón tras la muerte de Kurosawa Akira, y uno de los grandes representantes de la Nueva Ola japonesa de los años 60.
Estudió en la Universidad Waseda, iniciándose como actor y autor teatral. En el cine se inicia como ayudante del director Ozu Yasujirō; más tarde trabaja para la productora Nikkatsu, famosa por sus películas de porno blando. Más tarde su cine se centra en el estudio de las capas populares japonesas a lo largo de la Historia.
La crítica ha destacado su inconformismo humanista, al denunciar el paso de la sociedad nipona de la tradición al consumismo.
Entre sus filmes destacan Deseo robado (1958), Los pornógrafos (1966), La venganza es mía (1979), Eijanaika (1981), Lluvia negra (1989), Doctor Akagi (1998). Imamura ganó dos veces la Palma de Oro del Festival de Cannes: la primera en 1983 por La balada de Narayama, y la segunda en 1991 por La anguila.
今村 昌平（いまむら しょうへい、1926年〈大正15年〉9月15日 - 2006年〈平成18年〉5月30日）は、日本の映画監督、脚本家です。
日本の都会の底部や小さな農村を舞台にしたものが多く、日本人の意識の基層から来る性や本能･背徳といった人間の『欲』に焦点を当てたものが目立ちます。また、派手なアクションシーンなどは無い、重厚ながらも喜劇的でエネルギッシュな演出を好んでいました。
作品の随所に、人間の獲物を動物が横取りする場面が現れます。
今村昌平の『黒い雨』（くろいあめ）は、1989年5月13日より公開された原子爆弾（原爆）の恐怖と悲劇を描いた日本映画です。1965年に出版された井伏鱒二の小説『黒い雨』の映画化であります。矢須子に扮した主演の田中好子の演技は高く評価され、公開翌年の第13回日本アカデミー賞で最優秀作品賞をはじめ数々の部門で受賞しました。
英語圏ではBlack Rain （ブラック・レイン）という題名で上映されました。(奇しくも同じ1989年に同名でまったく別の映画「ブラック・レイン」が公開されており、こちらは大阪を舞台にしたアメリカ合衆国の映画であり、松田優作の遺作です。どちらの映画ともタイトルは、原子爆弾投下後に降る「黒い雨」のことを指しています。)
The film Black Rain moves between Shigematsu Shizuma's journal entries about Hiroshima in 1945, following the dropping of the atomic bomb, and the present, 1950, when Shigematsu and his wife Shigeko are the guardians for their niece Yasuko and charged with finding her a husband (she has been declined three times due to concerns over her having been in the "black rain" fallout). As the story progresses, Shigematsu sees more and more fellow hibakusha, his friends and family, succumbing to radiation sickness and Yasuko's prospects for marriage become more and more unlikely, as she forms a bond with a poor man named Yuichi, who carves jizo and suffers a form of post-traumatic stress disorder where he attacks passing motor vehicles as "tanks."
