今日７月８日は Chile を「発見」した最初のヨーロッパ人、Diego de Almagro (1479年 - 1538年7月8日）が亡くなった日です。Diego de Almagroは、スペイン人の coquistador（征服者）で、別名El Adelantado (征服地の統治権を持つ司令官）または El Viejo (老人）とも呼ばれたました。*Francisco Pizarro の仲間でしたが後にライバルとなりました。スペインによる Perú 征服に参加して、ヨーロッパ人として最初に Chile を「発見」したことで知られています。

Diego de Almagro (Almagro, España, 14751 - Cuzco, Perú, 7 de julio del 1538). Adelantado, fue un conquistador español. Participó en la conquista del Perú y se le considera oficialmente el "descubridor" de Chile, fue también el primer europeo en llegar al actual territorio de Bolivia.
それにしても、昔から Chile には 人が住んでいたわけですから、「発見」とか "descubridor" というのは何と差別的な表現なのでしょう。逆の decubierto「発見」された立場にもなって考えてほしいものです。

Chile は大衆的伝統の中で多くの詩人を生み出してきました。これは Chile の文学者の持つ長い歴史に相応して重要なことであり、特に詩の分野において傑出した人物としては Nicanor Parra、Vicente Huidobro、Gonzalo Rojas、Pablo de Rokha が挙げられ、Gabriela Mistral と *Pablo Neruda はノーベル文学賞をそれぞれ1945年と1971年に受賞しています。Gabriela Mistral はラテンアメリカで初めてのノーベル賞受賞でした。

小説の分野で代表的な作家としては、 Francisco Coloane、Manuel Rojas、José Donoso、Luis Sepúlveda、Roberto Bolaño、Antonio Skármeta、Isabel Allende、Jorge Edwards、Gonzalo Rojas などが挙げられます。Jorge Edwards は1999年に、Gonzalo Rojas は2003年にセルバンテス賞を受賞しました。
Chileans call their country país de poetas-country of poets. Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American to receive a Nobel Prize for Literature (1945). Chile's most famous poet, however, is Pablo Neruda, who also received the Nobel Prize for Literature (1971) and is world-renowned for his extensive library of works on romance, nature, and politics. His three highly personalized homes, located in Isla Negra, Santiago and Valparaíso are popular tourist destinations.
Among the list of other Chilean poets are Carlos Pezoa Véliz, Vicente Huidobro, Gonzalo Rojas, and Nicanor Parra.
Isabel Allende is the best-selling Chilean novelist, with 51 millions of her novels sold worldwide.
Novelist José Donoso's novel El obsceno pájaro de la noche (The Obscene Bird of the Night) is considered by critic Harold Bloom to be one of the canonical works of 20th century Western literature.
Another internationally recognized Chilean novelist is Roberto Bolaño whose translations into English have had an excellent reception from the critics.
