Cine 映画 A Farewell to Arms (1957年) 武器だけでなく...

1919年、つまり、94年前の今日、女優ジェニファー・ジョーンズ（Jennifer Jones, 出生名: Phylis Lee Isley, 1919年3月2日 - 2009年12月17日）が生まれています。

Jennifer Jones と云えば、(Hemingway によって文学の世界に引き込まれた) Ernesto Mr. T にとっては、映画 A Farewell to Arms (1957年度版) に イギリス人従軍看護婦 Catherine Barkley キャサリン・バークレイ役として出演していた女優なのです。

以下のような経緯もありましたが。

A Farewell to Arms had started with John Huston as director, but Selznick’s maddening demands and interminable memos sent Huston packing. Charles Vidor was the replacement. Jennifer Jones reportedly insisted that Ernest Hemingway should get a percentage of any eventual profits, but the writer retorted that considering how miscast (too old for the role) Jennifer Jones was that there probably wouldn’t be any. He was wrong. Though hardly a success among critics, the way overlong A Farewell to Arms became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

映画自体は第1作(1932年、Frank Borzage 監督作品､イタリア軍に志願した米国人・ Lieutenant Frederic Henry フレデリック・ヘンリー中尉に Gary Cooper ゲーリー・クーパー、 イギリス人従軍看護婦・キャサリン・バークレイに Helen Hayes ヘレン・ヘイズ)同様、とても素晴らしい作品とは呼べませんが､この映画を観て､もっともっと凄いと云われている原作・ヘミングウェイの作品の中で最も完成度の高い名作を読んでみたいと思われる方が１人でも出てくれば幸いです。(原作は今では多くの作家・批評家・一般読者によって世界的古典の１つと見做されています。)

原題の A Farewell to Arms は『武器よさらば』と訳されていますし､それ以上に良い訳を Ernesto Mr. T も思い浮かびませんが､英語の arms にはもちろん「両腕」という意味もあります。つまり、『両腕で固く抱きしめあったあの甘い愛の抱擁の思い出もさらば』という意味も含んでいるのです。ですから､上掲の絵は正にそれに A Farewell to Arms に相応しいものと言えます。

原作、映画ともに英語ですが､舞台は Italia なので、映画の最初の場面を Italia 語版で鑑賞してみましょう。
