今日､2月11日は boxeo の世界ヘビー級王者 Max Baer の誕生日です。1909年生まれですから､104年前です。
1929年5月16日(20歳)のプロデビューから５年後の、1934年6月14日、世界ヘビー級タイトルマッチで巨漢王者 Primo Carnera に挑戦し、11度のダウンを奪った上での11回TKO勝ちで王座を獲得しました。On June 14, 1934, Baer, after knocking him down 11 times, won by technical knock-out over the massive, 275-pound (125-kg) Primo Carnera, Heavyweight Champion of the World, to win the world title, which he would hold for 364 days.
残念ながら､そのほぼ一年後にずっと格下と見られた James J. Braddock に破れ、タイトルを失いました。僅か 364日の頂点でした。(これは 2005年にCinderella Man という映画にもなりましたが、Max Baer の描き方が Ernesto Mr. T は気に喰いません。)
Max Schmeling、Joe Louis などとの名勝負でファンを魅了した Max Baer でしたが、32歳のときの(1941年4月4日の)試合を最後にボクシングから引退しました。
ボクサー引退後は俳優として活動しましたが、僅か50歳で亡くなりました。
On Wednesday, November 18, 1959, Baer refereed a nationally televised 10-round boxing match in Phoenix. At the end of the match, to the applause of the crowd "Baer grasped the ropes and vaulted out of the ring." and "joined fight fans in a cocktail bar." The next day, he was scheduled to appear in several television commercials in Hollywood, California. On his way, he stopped in Garden Grove, California, to keep a promise he had made thirteen years earlier to the then five-year old son of his ex-sparring partner, Curly Owens. Baer presented the now 18-year-old with a foreign sports car on his birthday, as he had said he would.
Baer checked into the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel upon his arrival on November 19. "Hotel employees said he looked fit but complained of a cold." As he was shaving, the morning of November 21, he experienced chest pains. He called the front desk and asked for a doctor. The desk clerk said "a house doctor would be right up." "A house doctor?" he replied jokingly, "No, dummy, I need a people doctor".
A doctor gave Baer medicine, and a fire department rescue squad administered oxygen. His chest pains subsided and he was showing signs of recovery when the merely 50-year old fighter was stricken with a second attack. Just a moment before, he was joking with the doctor, declaring he had come through two similar but lighter attacks earlier in Sacramento, California. Then he slumped on his left side, turned blue and died within a matter of minutes. His last words reportedly were, "Oh God, here I go."
Comenzó su carrera en 1929. En 1933 propinó una feroz paliza a Max Schmeling en un combate que supuso la recaudación más alta que se había alcanzado hasta entonces, lo que le abrió las puertas del título mundial.
Arrebató a Primo Carnera dicho título en 1934, después de derribarlo doce veces. Lo perdió al año siguiente frente a James Braddock, lo cual supuso una gran sorpresa (las apuestas estaban 10 a 1 a favor de Baer, pero éste no se entrenó como debía y perdió el combate). El nocaut sufrido contra Joe Louis en 1935 frustró sus esperanzas de conquistar el título de nuevo, pese a lo cual continuó peleando hasta 1941. Su último combate fue contra Lou Nova, la primera pelea que se televisó en directo.
Ganó 65 de los 79 combates que disputó. Está considerado como uno de los mayores pegadores que existieron. Su derecha era mortífera. Uno de sus rivales falleció en el ring (su cerebro quedó desprendido del cráneo). Otro quedó tan maltrecho que falleció en el siguiente combate a consecuencia de las lesiones de su pelea anterior con Baer, quien debió someterse a tratamiento psiquiátrico para superar el momento.
A Max Baer se lo recuerda por su simpatía. Solía decir frases ingeniosas que han quedado en el recuerdo. También por su caballerosidad. Era amigo de sus adversarios, en especial de Primo Carnera y James J.Braddock, a quienes visitaba al término de la pelea. Incluso pagó los estudios de los hijos de aquel pugilista que había muerto en el cuadrilátero.
